Suicide Prevention in the Workplace Forum

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Program Overview

Every day in Australia, more than 7 people die as a result of suicide.  Every day, a further 180 attempt suicide and 84 are hospitalized due to deliberate self-harm.  By way of comparison, road accidents in 2011 accounted for less than 1,300 deaths or about HALF the suicide rate.  In some occupational groups, you are far more likely to die by suicide than a work-related accident.  Like road deaths and work-related injuries, suicide and self-harm can be prevented.

‘Workplaces represent “the last crucible of sustained human contact” for many of the people who kill themselves or self-harm each year.  A co-worker’s suicide has a deep, disturbing impact on work mates.  For managers, such tragedies pose challenges no one covered in management school.’  (Shellenbarger, 2001).

The ‘On the Job Forum’ will bring together many of Australia’s best practitioners in workplace suicide prevention, along with Sally Spencer-Thomas from the USA.  These experts will share their insights and practical strategies for creating a supportive workplace and provide tips on what every workplace can do to reduce the risk of suicide.

The ‘Working Minds Workshop’ on day 2 is a limited place program to enable participants to implement the program in their workplace.  Participants will be provided with a comprehensive resource kit to assist their work.
